Retro revival - Ladylike looks, tailored suits poised for a comeback
Can women who have grown fond of wearing trousers, twinsets and comfortable shoes be expected to trade them for a tailored suit, hosiery and high heels this fall?
What if plaid reminds women of parochial school uniforms or the scratchy wool kilts their mothers insisted they wear? Who's gutsy enough to wear optic prints, embossed leather skirts and knee-high boots?
These are the style questions that will be answered as summer fades into fall.
Spring 2007 is a season of change in fashion, and what's in store are looks that are both familiar and new. Today we feature these and other trends, using clothing from Denver area retailers.
Designers seem intent on plumbing the past to come up with fresh takes on how to dress for fall. They're unified in reviving the matched suit - whether it be vintage-inspired, furtrimmed and feminine, or modern, man-tailored and sleek. They're also rediscovering the power of plaid and continuing their love affair with leather. Finally, if if there was any doubt that the minimalism trend was dead, the plethora of bags, belts, shoes and jewelry being offered will dispel it.
"It's a season where we're seeing an emphasis on luxury," says LaVelle Olexa, vice president for fashion merchandising at Lord & Taylor. "It's the richness of such materials as leather and fur, as well as a return to ladylike silhouettes that has the greatest appeal."
